Let it Snow: Best Winter Activities

With the fluffy, freshly fallen snow, and cooler temperatures starting to arise, winter becomes the perfect time of year for seasonal activities. The ideas become infinite and creative such as building an igloo, having a snowball fight, going skiing, watching Christmas movies while drinking hot chocolate, or even wrapping gifts with your family.

Ella Theaker, a junior, said “I like to go ice skating in Rosa Parks circle in the winter. I like going with my friends, boyfriend, or family. I’m not that good but I don’t fall so it’s a lot of fun.” Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids isn’t having its ice rink open this year due to construction, but some alternate ice rinks to visit this year include Patterson Ice Center, Kentwood Ice Arena, or Eagles Ice Center.

Barbie DeGood, a senior and member of the CHS ski team, said “I really am looking forward to conference races because I like to run gates, especially in slalom. One of my goals this year is to go to conferences and go to states.” If you want to experience her excitement in a more relaxed setting, the popular ski resorts around Grand Rapids, Cannonsburg, and Bittersweet are the perfect destination. They offer snow hills for both skiing and snowboarding, with prices ranging from free to $65 depending on the hill, age, day/time of day, and place.

Lily Goerbig, a junior, likes spending her time in the winter watching Christmas movies and drinking hot chocolate: “My favorite Christmas movie would have to be Christmas Vacation because it’s really funny and I like watching it with my family.”Hallmark Christmas movies are a big hit in the winter. They are viewed by many as cheesy romantic comedies, but some people have a soft spot for those genres.

There are tons of activities to partake in during the winter, from being active and going ice skating or skiing, to watching Christmas movies on your couch alongside family and friends.
