New Year’s Resolutions

2020 was an extremely challenging year for all of us, some harder than others. Going into 2021 we all hope this year will be better and things will go back to normal, this may not be the case. It all starts with new year’s resolutions, hopefully optimistic ones. Going into the new year only 43% of people plan on making some sort of new year resolution. Many new year’s resolutions involve weight loss, getting organized, starting a new hobby, spending less money, or even spending more time with friends and family. Have you ever made a resolution similar to these?

While the rest of us are making resolutions about weight loss or organization, sophomore Paige Williamson has other things in mind. “I have really gotten into taking pictures lately and this year I want to expand on that. I want to travel a little bit, capture beautiful pictures and hopefully keep doing that.” Williamson says she hopes to carry out her newfound hobby and keep running with it.

2020 made it hard for us to come into the near year optimistic, meaning our resolutions probably weren’t as challenging as they usually are. For some it could be as simple as making your bed every morning after you wake up, or it could be something more specific and difficult, like losing 50 pounds. New Year’s resolutions vary from person to person but the real question is, will you actually accomplish it? Less than 8% of people actually stick to their resolutions each year, it’s all about sticking to your goals.

Lija Sverns says “I make a ton of resolutions every year but the chance of me sticking to them is pretty low. This year I really wanna try to stick to it, challenge myself. I didn’t choose anything hard of course, maybe I’ll pick up a new hobby or get better at playing the piano. I try not to think of too many things because I just don’t know if I’ll stick to it.” Going into 2021 more people want to try to stick to their goals, so they make them the slightest bit easier.

Throughout the years do your goals seem to get easier? 35% of participants who failed their New Year’s resolutions admitted they had unrealistic goals and 23% of them forgot about their goals. “Going into this year I don’t plan to make many resolutions, especially hard ones. I’ve made hard ones in the past and it’s just useless considering I’ll probably just forget about it.” Says Maddie Fortune when speaking on resolutions.

While this year was a hard one all we can do is go into 2021 head first and hope it all works out in the end. Go into your goals confidently and come out the other side, try to stick to these resolutions. This year was hard enough, go into the new year with hope and newfound goals and hopefully this year will brighten up.
