Halloween In Caledonia
Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient festival of Samhain, where people would light campfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Over time, Halloween has become a day of activities, such as trick-or-treating and carving pumpkins. The first celebrations in America started with “play parties” that included the celebration of the harvest. At these ‘parties’ people would tell stories of the dead, sing, and dance. In the second half of the nineteenth century, America was being flooded with immigrants. Soon Halloween became very popular in Maryland and was able to spread its way across the country.
In Caledonia, Halloween is celebrated by all ages. Some, more than others, enjoy dressing up for the night and going out, whether it’s out to a party of just trick-or-treating around their neighborhood. For example, this past weekend, a group of high schoolers got together and had a Halloween party where they all dressed up and enjoyed each other’s company. They even had a Halloween costume contest – the winners were 4 girls dressed up as Toy Squeeze Aliens from Toy Story. Celebrating Halloween has become a positive way for students to interact with each other outside of their daily lives at Caledonia High school.
