Halloween Happenings
With Halloween right around the corner, students at CHS are preparing to dress up in costumes with friends and family. They will celebrate the holiday this Saturday and Sunday night through local neighborhoods from 6 to 8 pm.
Halloween originated with the Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and dress up in costumes to scare off the ghosts. Today, Halloween has been filled with alternate activities, such as carving pumpkins, drinking cider, and going trick-or-treating. Although Halloween is on a Sunday this year, many local neighborhoods in Caledonia are passing out candy on Saturday.
Erica Verma (12) says, “I am excited that we have a half-day this Friday (October 29th). For Halloween, I am going to be passing out candy to kids that come through the neighborhood on Sunday evening. October has gone by fast and I can’t believe that Halloween is already here!”
Many students spend their Halloween night watching scary movies, passing out candy, or dressing up and playing games with friends. When passing out candy, many houses allow children to get one piece of candy, 2 pieces, or sometimes an entire handful. Kids like to target the houses where they receive king-size candy bars.
Emily Schelling (12) says, “When I used to go trick-or-treating, there was this one house that made you sing to receive a king-size candy bar of your choice. Every time Halloween came around I was always excited to go with friends and sing to receive our king-size candy bars and thought that it was a cool idea to do.”
Overall, students are anticipating the night full of scares and amusement awaiting them this weekend.
