Eyerusalem Weldgebriel: From Refugee Camp to the United States
“I was fifteen years old when I came to the United States. I am from the small African country of Eritrea but was sent to a refugee camp in the neighboring country of Ethiopia after crossing the border and being unable to go back. The refugee camp was the worst experience of my life, and I cried for weeks being away from my mother, sister, and two younger brothers. I took the opportunity to come to the United States knowing it would be hard, but better than my life in the camp. I didn’t know any English and everything was so different from my old life. I am seventeen years old now, and I still struggle with adjusting to another culture. There have been times I wanted to give up but my struggles make me stronger. I am grateful for them.”
