“I wasn’t aware that words could hold so much. I didn’t know a sentence could be so full,” (Owens).

Delia Owens wrote an astonishing and captivating book titled Where the Crawdads Sing. While reading this book, the longing to discover the story of a  young boy, while also venturing into many different perspectives of the other characters, has left the audience emotionally involved and hanging on every word. This book follows a  young girl named Kya who lives in a marsh and has been rejected by all of her family and friends. She is most commonly mocked as the “marsh girl,”  but can undoubtedly survive given her seemingly insurmountable odds in life. Without being given any way to travel, earn money, or sustain life, Kya has to fend for herself in a world of judgment and mockery.

This book alternates between the years that Kya is young contrasted with the years of an investigation around the marsh. A young boy is found dead in the marsh by locals, who immediately report it. The main defendant of the case was Kya. With the author switching effortlessly between the two time periods, complexity is constructed within the plot. The constant unknown of uncovering the mystery that unfolds throughout the book causes many readers never to want to set the book down.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a romance and mystery novel. Although this book has mature scenes, this is included in the context and so it would be veered toward mature readers. I would rate this book 5/5 stars because it was one of the books that I wish I could read from the start again without knowing what is going to happen. This book has interwoven the idea of romance with the complexity of relationships, which creates the incredible masterpiece of Where the Crawdads Sing
