“Sometimes you need to give up on people, not because you don’t care but because they don’t.”

Avery Kibbey, Business Manager

There is a difference between a partner who is becoming distant because they need space, and someone who has been acting distant because they’re falling out of love. Although it can be difficult to tell the difference between the two, the most important thing to remember is to never jump to conclusions. If you realize that your partner is distancing themselves from you, the first thing that you should do is talk to them.

“Communication is one of the most important things that a relationship can have,” says  world-renowned psychotherapist Candance Southall. One of the hardest things to recognize  in a relationship is that time apart can oftentimes be a good thing. It is true what they say: “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” According to the MIT Technology Review website, having time apart allows you to focus on yourself rather than living through the relationship. If you are becoming worried about having too much space between you and your partner, then here are some ways that experts have shared on how to  tell if they are slowly backing out of the relationship.

One way that someone may show their  questioning of a relationship is having longer response times than before. When a message is received on one’s phone, serotonin is released in the brain, a key hormone that increases our feelings of well-being. When we receive a text message from someone of high interest, our serotonin levels increase dramatically. Later in the relationship, if you realize that your partner is having longer response periods, it alludes to the fact that when they receive a text message from you, they no longer  feel a sense of urgency to text you back. Meaning, if they are not texting you back right away, the serotonin levels have significantly decreased from when you might have started texting in the first place.

Another way that your partner may be distancing themselves is suddenly becoming increasingly busier. Often in a relationship, you will want to spend every waking moment of your free time together. If, after many attempts to try and spend time with your partner, their answer remains the same of them being busy, they are purposely distancing themselves from the relationship. Of course, there may be reasons that your partner is wanting alone time other than disinterest. One reason may be that they are stressed in some way, and being alone is the best way to cope. They also may be classified as an introvert, which would make them feel that the safest place to be is in the comfort of their own home. This is yet another example why you should always communicate with your partner. If you may think that they are distancing themselves from the relationship, when they are just looking to find alone time, that would be an important topic of conversation to discuss.

A human behavior sign that you could pick up on is your partner becoming less enthusiastic. Often, when talking to someone of great interest to you, you will become giddy. While everyone is entitled to having a bad day, a partner may suddenly become unenthusiastic regarding all things in a relationship. Sometimes, if a partner starts to show a lack of attentiveness, it would be in your best interest to let the other person go, for their sake and yours.

Subtle signs that may lead to your partner losing interest in the relationship could be as simple as forgetting to call you before you go to bed, or forgetting to say affirmations to you after a conversation. One sign that they may be planning to end the relationship is if your partner no longer says “I love you” to you. The only time that they might say it is when they feel obliged to say “I love you” after you say it first.

An expert on the subject, Dr. Carla Manly, said in an interview that, “If your partner usually says terms of endearment to you, and they start to no longer say these things to you, it could be a sign that the love is diminishing on their side of the relationship.” Picking up on these small details may very likely save you from a heartbreak that could have been avoided.

The final sign of  someone falling out of love with you is that they might not be able to picture a future with you. There are two different ways that you can date: you can either date with intentions, or you can just date to date around. Having this information from your partner will be a key aspect of continuing your relationship and will give you a good look at  where you stand in each other’s lives.

Do these subtle behavior changes apply to you and your relationship? The best thing that you can do is communicate with your partner to see where they stand in the  relationship. By communicating openly, you might be able to save yourself from a heart-wrenching breakup, or decide when it’s time to end the pain of remaining in a relationship that is one-sided.
